Celebrating Together : Spring 2026

Helena, Montana

This spring (2026) we celebrated our 4th Eid al-Adha picnic with our refugee families. We are reminded once again of the resilience, generosity and strength within our HARRT community. Despite ongoing uncertainty, our families continue to move forward with courage and determination.

We currently have four remaining families awaiting their green cards. All paperwork has been submitted and now comes the long wait for processing. Unfortunately, due to current federal administrative constraints, this process could take up to two years.

The greatest challenge during this waiting period is the loss of essential services for non–green card holders. In October, legal refugees who are still in the process of obtaining permanent residency will no longer qualify for Medicaid. In Montana, the governor decided these benefits will end July 1. Like so many Americans, our families are deeply concerned about the loss of healthcare coverage. We are actively exploring low-cost insurance options and employer-sponsored plans, though most remain unaffordable for families working low-income jobs. At the same time, many families are also losing SNAP benefits during the renewal process, making it increasingly difficult to put food on the table.

Many of our refugees are highly educated and hold advanced degrees. They bring talent, knowledge and dedication to our community. They want to get working in their field and contribute.

HARRT assists with:

  • Finding job training opportunities and internships
  • Helping individuals obtain professional documents and certifications
  • Supporting enrollment in classes needed to continue careers or transition into new professions
  • Continuing levels of ESL classes; speaking, reading and writing

Thank you for supporting Hands On Global’s humanitarian work. There is so much need at times it feels overwhelming. Our team is small but one of action and with your help we continue to work “hand to hand and heart to heart”.

Thank you,
Valerie Hellermann, Executive Director
